Different strains of cannabis produce terpenes; while some strains have similar terpenes, the proportion of those terpenes varies significantly. Therefore, there is a wide range of terpene profiles (chemical compounds) across different strains and ages of cannabis plants. Because terpenes are found in a variety of plants (such as citrus fruits, pine trees, mint plants, and hops), it is likely that they serve as defense and signaling agents to prevent or repel pests.
