Steroids belong to a different class of lipids than terpenes because of their unique four-ring structure. Unlike terpenes which are highly volatile and provide an aromatic scent/flavor, steroids are stable, lipid-based hormones made from cholesterol. Steroids exert a variety of biological effects; however, they cannot be classified as terpenes.
